  • I fully expect that a future volume of DSM-IV will have a name for at least one syndrome originating from its victims' childhood experience of having been forced to listen to bedtime stories read by the Kindle 2.
  • "We're studying this matter closely and will report back to you," says the Author's Guild website, and it advises authors to be tenacious with their e-book rights.
  • The Author's Guild is not widely known as a particularly democratic, open, or truly author-driven organization -- compared, say, with PEN or the National Writer's Union -- but it has received plenty of ink lately with a reasonably successful legal settlement against Google Book Search and a less effective campaign against the Amazon Marketplace used book portal.
  • After all, this "Text-to-Speech" software is the product of Nuance, the Burlington, MA, software developer behind the popular Dragon Speaking Naturally "Speech-to-Text" programs.
  • Second, go to the Kindle 2 accessories page and check out the new M-Edge Platform Jackets for the Kindle 2, which stand up elegantly for hands-free Kindle reading and can also accommodate a book light.
  • There are some great cookbooks now available for the Kindle, including a major new Kindle exclusive cookbook from Cook's Illustrated that, at this writing, is being offered free of charge to Kindle owners.
  • Of course, if you're going to cook with the Kindle, you'll want to pick up one of those nifty hands-free platform covers from M-Edge that I mentioned above.
  • One of my favorite uses of this much-improved feature involves enjoying each week's feast of New Yorker cartoons.
  • The most popular alternative to this default dictionary is Merriam-Webster's Pocket Dictionary, which is reasonably affordable at a current Kindle Store price of $5.95.
  • These Kindles and/or other devices must be registered to the same Kindle account via Amazon's Manage Your Kindle page.
  • Your Kindle 2 arrives with Whispersync turned on, whether or not you own multiple Kindle-enabled devices, and if you wish to turn Whispersync off you should go to Amazon's Manage Your Kindle page (make sure that you are signed in under your own Amazon account, and that this is the account to which your Kindle is registered.
  • Many of Amazon's Kindle Store listings, such as this edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover with my 1973 introduction on Lawrence's process of revising it through three manuscript versions, now display a line in their Product Details sections that says "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited"
